NO MAN'S LAND

So I'm here
Beyond your prayers
At the point of no return.
Mind blank, eyes wide, I stare
At the edge of my world, a gate
I dare not trespass.
Sunset's glare lights the face
Of pale chaos there
Towering decay
And moonlight skies to mark the way
Into this foreign land.
Slivers of history watch
With keen eyes of polished brass
As I step beyond my safety
Off the dock, into the depths
Of the heart.
Eyes, be true to my soul's voice
As billowing winds rush
Past the ears
Of giants of stone,
Cut by fire,
Scratched by the nails of
Angry gales, and seared
By the care of so many ages.
And this wilderness song
The past beneath my feet,
The future, a river, runs
Before my path, and here I am
In this no man's land,
Alone, estranged, and home.
